Adrian’s Story

When Adrian was made redundant, his life changed in ways he hadn’t expected. Losing his job meant losing not only his income, but also much of the routine, structure and social interaction that had been part of his everyday life.

He found himself spending a lot of time alone and struggling socially. With his confidence low, Adrian wasn’t sure where to turn or what his next step should be. He was introduced to Helping Hands Community Project, and although taking that first step wasn’t easy, it became the beginning of a very different chapter in his life.

At first, Adrian was gradually introduced to the team and given the time and space to feel comfortable. He started attending our Men’s Group, where he found a welcoming environment, the opportunity to meet other people and a place where he could simply be himself.

As he became a regular member of the group, Adrian’s confidence slowly began to grow. He started getting involved in different activities and building relationships with the people around him. One of these opportunities was our mosaic group, led by Jacqui, where Adrian took part in creating mosaics alongside other members of the group.

For Adrian, being involved wasn’t just about learning something new or creating something to take home. It was about being part of something, trying something different and having his efforts recognised. At the end of the group, Adrian was awarded a certificate to celebrate his participation, a small but meaningful recognition of how far he had come.

Over time, the changes in Adrian became more and more noticeable. The man who had once been isolated and unsure of where to turn was becoming more confident, more socially connected and more willing to try new things.

With the support and encouragement he received, Adrian went on to find employment and began rebuilding his social life. He developed new friendships, gained confidence and started to feel a renewed sense of purpose.

But Adrian’s journey didn’t stop there.

Having experienced first-hand the difference that the right support and encouragement can make, Adrian wanted to give something back. Today, he is a Client Trustee of Helping Hands, playing an active role in the organisation and helping to shape the support we provide to others.

Adrian’s journey is a reminder that progress doesn’t always happen overnight. Sometimes it starts with something as simple as having somewhere to go, someone to talk to, or an opportunity to get involved.

From redundancy and isolation to employment, friendship, confidence and becoming a Client Trustee, Adrian has come a long way.

And we’re incredibly proud to have been part of his journey.
