When Shelter Fails: Why Homelessness Demands More Than Compassion
A Growing Crisis We Can No Longer Ignore
Every night, thousands of people in the UK live without a place to call home. According to the House of Commons Library, in England alone, rough sleeping rose to 4,667 people on a single night in autumn 2024 – a 20% increase from the previous year.
Meanwhile, over 131,000 households are in temporary accommodation, and more than 354,000 people across England are currently experiencing homelessness.
But these numbers only tell part of the story. Homelessness isn’t just sleeping rough – it’s sofa surfing, staying in cars or hostels, or living in unsafe and unstable conditions.
The hidden homelessness crisis is growing – it’s the faces we don’t see, and the stories we don’t hear.”
Our Response: Turning Compassion Into Action
At Helping Hands Community Project, we don’t just offer help – we walk beside people facing homelessness, poverty, and trauma, providing both practical and emotional support.
Here’s how we make a difference every day:
- Soup Kitchen – A hot meal, a smile, and a place to belong.
- House to Home Project – Furnishing new homes for those moving out of homelessness.
- Counselling & Support Groups – Safe spaces for those living with trauma and mental health challenges.
- Creative Social Enterprise – Mosaic, woodwork, and resin workshops that rebuild confidence and connection and work towards being sustainable projects.
- Community Engagement – From walking football to volunteering, every activity fosters dignity and inclusion.
Jo Merrick, Special Project Ops Manager at Helping Hands says, “Our goal isn’t just to meet immediate needs – it’s to restore confidence, purpose, and community.”
The 10th Annual Big Sleep Out
This World Homeless Day, we’re proud to host our 10th Annual Big Sleep Out – a night where local businesses, volunteers, and community members come together to sleep outside in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness.
It’s more than an event – it’s a statement. It’s a reminder that each of us is only ever a few steps away from needing help ourselves.
Funds raised from the Big Sleep Out directly support our front-line services – from hot meals to counselling sessions, to furniture for families moving into safe accommodation.
Stacey Calder, our event lead reminds us, “When we choose to sleep outside for one night, we shine a light on those who have no choice.”
The Human Cost – and the Hope
Homelessness rarely happens in isolation. More than 60% of people experiencing homelessness also struggle with substance misuse or mental health issues.
Every story is different – but the outcome is often the same: isolation, stigma, and fear. At Helping Hands, we work to rewrite those stories.
We’ve seen men and women rediscover self-worth through our creative projects. We’ve seen friendships form around a soup kitchen table. And we’ve seen lives changed when the community refuses to look away.
How You Can Help
This World Homeless Day, we invite you to take action:

Jacqui Grove, Fundraising & Comms lead at our charity invites you to be a part of the change – “Homelessness is not inevitable. Together, we can change the narrative.”
In Closing
We believe in a community where no one is left behind – where kindness, dignity, and opportunity are available to everyone.
Every meal served, every counselling session delivered, every home furnished – it all begins with someone choosing to care.
So, this World Homeless Day, we ask: Will you stand with us?
Together, we can help Leamington – and beyond – feel like home again.
