Challenging Poverty Starts with Compassion – And Action

“Poverty is not just about what’s missing in someone’s wallet – it’s about what’s missing in their opportunities.”

This week marks Challenge Poverty Week, a national moment to highlight both the realities of hardship and the hope that communities like ours can bring.

Here in Leamington Spa, we’re proud to be part of a growing movement tackling poverty in all its forms – homelessness, food insecurity, unemployment, and social isolation.

At Helping Hands Community Project, our mission is simple: to offer a hand up, not a handout. Every day, we see how poverty affects people differently – from rough sleepers who come to our Soup Kitchen for a hot meal, to those who access our Daniel’s Rise & Akeeva support groups to rebuild their lives after crisis.

One of our regulars recently said: “This isn’t just a place for food – it’s a place to be seen, to be heard.”

That’s what community looks like.

But poverty isn’t only about homelessness. Across Warwickshire, thousands are facing hidden poverty – working multiple jobs and still struggling to make ends meet. According to recent data, 1 in 6 residents in our region live below the poverty line. The cost-of-living crisis has deepened the divide, and charities like ours are feeling the demand more than ever.

Our projects – from creative Mosaic Workshops that rebuild confidence, to our new Oxford Street Charity Shop that funds vital counselling sessions – all work towards one goal: helping people move forward with dignity, purpose, and hope.

Last Friday, on World Homeless Day, we hosted our 10th Annual Big Sleep Out – where local businesses and residents spent one night sleeping rough to raise awareness and vital funds. It’s a humbling reminder that many of us are just a few steps away from needing support ourselves.

Because when one person falls through the cracks, it affects all of us.

So, as Challenge Poverty Week unfolds, we invite our community – individuals, businesses, and schools – to take action:

  • Partner with us on a business social impact volunteering experiences
  • Support our fundraising efforts
  • Visit or donate to our Oxford Street Charity Shop
  • Share our story – and help us challenge poverty together

Let’s continue proving that when a community comes together, compassion can change lives.

“When we lift others, we RISE together.”
