A Day of Inspiration at Sacred Heart & St Catherine of Alexandria, Droitwich Spa
In April, our social enterprise group enjoyed a truly memorable day out to Sacred Heart & St Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in Droitwich Spa – a visit that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.
The idea for the trip began some weeks earlier, when one of our service users spotted a short BBC feature about the church and shared it with the group. This immediately sparked excitement, particularly among the men who had recently completed our 12‑week Fundamentals of Mosaic Workshop, where they learned the traditional art of mosaic‑making and produced beautiful handmade pieces. Many of these creations have since been sold at Art in the Park, helping to generate vital income that sustains the project and supports future opportunities.
A Church Rich in History and Art
Sacred Heart & St Catherine of Alexandria is a church of remarkable heritage. Originally built in the early 20th century, it is widely recognised for its stunning interior and spiritual atmosphere. While the exterior offers a modest introduction, stepping inside reveals a breathtaking space filled with colour, storytelling, and craftsmanship.

The church is best known for its extraordinary mosaic work, which covers vast stretches of the interior. These mosaics were created by skilled artisans and depict a range of religious scenes, saints, symbols, and intricate patterns. Thousands upon thousands of tiny tesserae come together to form images that are both powerful and deeply moving. The scale, detail, and patience required to complete such work left our group in awe.

Seeing the Possibilities of Large‑Scale Mosaic
For the men in our group, many of whom had recently spent weeks learning how to cut, place, and grout individual tiles by hand, the visit was especially meaningful. Seeing large‑scale mosaic art in situ brought everything they had learned to life.
What had once been a tabletop project or a small decorative item suddenly connected to something much bigger. The visit highlighted how mosaic art can shape a space, tell stories, and create a lasting emotional impact. Several participants reflected on how inspiring it was to see what is possible with time, collaboration, and belief in the process.

Experiences like this can have a profound effect on mental wellbeing. Creative practice encourages focus, patience, and self‑expression, while shared experiences build connection and confidence. To see their own skills mirrored, on a much grander scale – within such a beautiful and meaningful setting reinforced a strong sense of pride and possibility among the group.
A Warm Welcome and an Exceptional Guide
Our visit was made even more special by John, our volunteer guide, whose knowledge, enthusiasm, and patience were evident throughout the afternoon. He took the time to explain not only the history of the church but also the techniques, challenges, and vision behind the mosaic work.
Reflecting on the afternoon, John shared:
“From a guide’s point of view it is always good to have a responsive group who are truly interested in the subject and who have so many insights and questions.
Please thank them all. It was one of the best tour groups I have taken round!”
Hearing this meant a great deal to the group and staff alike.
Voices from the Group
The impact of the visit was best summed up by the participants themselves.
Adrian commented that he had “a really enjoyable day” and described the mosaic designs as “awesome.”
Nourddienne, meanwhile, was momentarily lost for words, simply saying he had “no words” to describe the experience.
Sometimes, art speaks more loudly than anything else.

A Huge Thank You
This inspiring afternoon trip would not have been possible without the generous grant funding provided by Sunbelt Rentals UK & Ireland. Their support enabled nine participants, 7 service users & 2 staff members to take part in an experience that broadened horizons, reinforced skills, and uplifted wellbeing.
We want to say a massive thank you to Sunbelt Rentals UK & Ireland for believing in the value of creative, community‑focused projects like ours. The impact of this day extended far beyond a single visit-it strengthened confidence, sparked new ideas, and reminded everyone involved of what can be achieved when creativity, opportunity, and support come together.
